There is a story that during the Mexican Revolution (1910-1921), in Juárez, Chihuahua (Northern Mexico) a man named Juan Méndez sold tacos from a street stand, using a
donkey to transport himself and his food. To help keep the food warm, he had the idea of wrapping the food in a large flour tortilla inside individual napkins. His fame spread and people came and asked for the “food of the burrito” (donkey).
Burritos are one of the most popular examples of Mexican cuisine throughout the world. We think Juan and his donkey would be proud of the tradition he started over a century ago.
